City and Rural Students Connect Through Science

On May 27, approximately 70 students from inner city Portland, Sandy, and rural eastern Oregon high schools will join together at Timberline Lodge to share their conclusions to real-life science problems at the Mt. Hood Student Science Exchange Summit. The students have been mentored by adult natural resource professionals throughout the school year to answer scientific questions which advance science and natural resource management. In addition to learning about science and future professions, the students will gain experiences in cultural diversity as they interact with students from different cultural backgrounds and city/rural environments.

By working on projects located on Mt. Hood National Forest, at Portland’s Smith and Bybee Lakes, and in the vicinity of Mitchell, Oregon, the students have been challenged to learn environmental science by actually “doing the science”. In the process, the students have also learned how to lead and interact as a team.

Portland schools are represented by students from Marshall High School’s Pauling Academy and Jefferson and David Douglas High Schools. Students from the towns and high schools of Sandy, Dufur, and Mitchell, Oregon are also participating. The students will share their conclusions to a variety of scientific questions related to beaver populations, northern flying squirrel habitat, structures of soils, relationships between nutria and beaver, and effects of restoring aquatic habitat and river side channel habitat.

The Mt. Hood Student Science Exchange Summit is sponsored through a partnership between Wolftree Inc., The Freshwater Trust, Timberline Lodge (RLK & Company), and Mt. Hood National Forest. The Summit will be held at Timberline Lodge from 9:00 am to 2:00 p.m. on May 27th. The news media is welcome. However, the event is not open to the general public.
