Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ever. Really, we won’t mind. Here are some answers to a few questions about lessons that might be rattling around in your head. We’ve thrown in some other Timberline skiing tips too.

Where do we meet?
DISCOVERNEXT STEP and PRIVATE lessons (Beginner and Intermediate) form at the Ski & Ride School assignment area just above Bruno’s Beginner Chairlift. Look for the Timberline Ski & Ride School signs. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before scheduled class time.

Is there a lunch break?
With full day lessons, yes. Classes break for one hour beginning at noon.

What type of lift ticket is included?
DISCOVER package lift tickets are valid on Bruno’s Beginner Chairlift only.
NEXT STEP package lift tickets are valid on all chairlifts.
PRIVATE lesson packages include all-mountain lift privileges while with your instructor.
KIDS CLUB package lift tickets are valid on all lifts.

What is the typical class size?
Class sizes are small for more personalized instruction, averaging 8 or less for adult lessons, and 6 or less for kids club lessons.

What equipment is included in the rental package?
The alpine skiing rental package includes skis, poles and boots. The snowboard rental package includes snowboard w/bindings and snowboard boots.

What else should I bring?
-Wicking long underwear tops and bottoms
-Waterproof ski gloves or mittens
-Waterproof and windproof ski jacket
-Midweight top or fleece shirt (for layering options)
-Goggles
-Neck gaiter
-Waterproof/breathable ski pants
-Lip balm and sunscreen
-Helmet or a warm hat that covers your ears
-Wicking ski socks (thin wool socks are best, thick wool socks often cut off circulation in boots)

Do I need a helmet?
Timberline Lodge encourages the use of helmets. Please use your best judgment. Helmets can be rented or purchased at Timberline.

How do I determine my level?
Please refer to our Ski or Snowboard Ability Level assessment chart. If you are hesitant, hedge on the conservative side, especially if time has passed since the last time you skied or snowboarded. This will give you the opportunity to regain confidence and refresh your skills.

What if I want more personal attention?
PRIVATE lesson is a fantastic option if you learn best in a one-on-one environment. Private lessons allow you to progress at your own pace.

Can I request a specific instructor?
Yes, but we can only guarantee you a specific instructor if you book a PRIVATE lesson.

Will I get the same instructor if I take multiple private lessons?
No, but you may request the same instructor, and we will do our best to accommodate you.

What if I am late for my lesson?
We will try to integrate you into the appropriate class, but you may have to reschedule for another time or day.

Do I need a reservation?
We do not take reservations for Discover and Next Step Lessons. The Timberline Kids Club and our Freestyle Camps require reservations. Reservations for PRIVATE lessons are recommended in order to guarantee the availability of an instructor.

What if I can’t use my lesson ticket that day?
We will be happy to switch your lesson to another date. Tickets are nonrefundable.

I’d like to become an instructor – what do I need to know?
We hold an instructor hiring clinic every Fall. Dates for next year will be posted this summer. You can always keep an eye on our Jobs page to see if we have any current positions open.
