We're all responsible for the future of our environment...
As the area operator of Timberline Lodge, we are dedicated to the preservation and stewardship of the lodge and it's natural alpine surroundings. The issue of 'Global Warming' is a hot topic in the news these days, and we are often left wondering what we as snowsports enthusiasts can do to help the issue. This page has been developed to help answer that question.
First, to let you know what we're doing as a company: Timberline has increased its focus on sustainability and environmental consciousness throughout our organization. We are evaluating everything we do and looking for better ways to do it. Here are some of the things currently under way:
A New Wind Powered Chairlift - The Jeff Flood Express, our new lift that accesses our Still Creek Basin, is powered by renewable energy sources like wind power. Working with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, we purchased renewable energy credits to offset the entire annual load of the lift.
Earth friendly products in our cafeteria - We've partnered with the local company 'Stalk Market' to purchase paper tableware and cutlery for our Black Iron Grill in the Wy'East Day Lodge.
These products are made from sugar cane fiber and are biodegradable, recyclable and compostable. 100% tree and plastic free, they are made entirely from sustainable resources.
Reduce/Reuse/Recycle - Timberline is taking measures to reduce our use of precious resources by doing things such as installing motion sensor lights. From offering cloth napkins in our resturaunt to bottling our beer at the Mt. Hood Brewing Company in reuseable gallon "growlers," we are finding ways to reuse materials and resources. Timberline Lodge itself incporporated many recycled products when it was built back in 1937. Nowadays, in operating the lodge, we honor that tradition with a focus on the future by recycling cardboard, paper, newsprint, magazines, oils, beverage containers, and metals.
The operators of Timberline are dedicated to providing quality recreation within the capabilities of the ecosystem, and we accept the stewardship responsibility of the historic lodge and its environs. In addition to the above, we organize annual mountain clean-up days each spring, follow all state and federal environmental laws in our planning processes, employ light-on-the-land, best management practices in our projects and operations, promote car-pooling and shuttle transportation, and financially support numerous environmental organizations. We also participate in ski industry outreach campaigns concerning global warming and the environment. Timberline is a charter member of the National Ski Area Association Environmental Charter and Sustainable Slopes campaign.
So the question still remains... what can you do to help our shared cause? This year we're offering 'Green Tags' for purchase along with our lift tickets and season pass products. These are individual $2 "renewable energy credits" that are aimed at capping greenhouse gas pollution by providing you with a "carbon offset" based on a 120 miles, a trip to and from Portland.

SkiGreen is a partnership between the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) and leaders in the winter sports industry to build support for non-polluting renewable sources of energy (such as wind and solar energy).
Ski areas depend on a reliable snow-pack to provide their guests with a high quality winter-sports experience. But air pollution from greenhouse gases - primarily from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas - is causing unseasonably warmer temperatures, reduction in snow-pack levels and ultimately lower quality ski conditions over fewer ski days.
When guests SkiGreen, they reduce the impacts caused by their own activities, such as the air pollution produced by driving to Timberline Lodge.
As with all of BEF’s Green Tags programs, the revenues generated from these sales go to supporting our mission to transform the energy system. SkiGreen is “greening” the grid one skier at a time.
For a calculated fee of $2 per tag, you can offset the global warming pollution generated from drivingto the slopes. We'll provide you with a sticker that you can proudly apply to your car, skis/snowboard, or helmet to let other people know that you care about the environment and the future of our winter. $20 tags are also available for Season Pass holders that want to contribute more for their on-going committment.
Green Tags are available at all Timberline Ticket Windows, and we encourage you to participate in the program.
